Accelerated Reader (AR) is a computerized learning enrichment program that assesses the quantity and quality of independent reading and allows each student to progress at her/his own pace and level of reading ability. It provides teachers and children a fun and exciting way to encourage and monitor reading at home and in the classroom.

How Accelerated Reader works: The program is for all students in grades 1-5. The books in the school library are organized and color-coded by reading levels. Students may select from a wide variety of AR books at their independent reading level. Students may also use books from home or other libraries. To find the reading level of a specific book or a list of titles in a specific range, go to http://www.arbookfind.com/.
The level is determined by a computerized test called the STAR Reading Test. This test should not be confused with the Standardized Testing and Reporting (STAR) test mandated by the state of California. As soon as students have finished reading a book either in class or at home, they may take an independent Reading Practice Quiz on the computer in the classroom or computer lab, to assess reading comprehension. Both the student and teacher get immediate, individualized and constructive feedback, which encourages ongoing reading. The students earn a certain number of points, depending on how many of the test questions they answer correctly and the difficulty of the book.
The program tracks their progress over the course of the school year and generates reports for students and teachers.With each test taken, a student receives a "Reading Practice TOPS Report" showing the score of that specific test and indicating the number of tests passed/taken during the quarter as well as year-to-date. The TOPS report also shows the average book level at which a student has been reading. This is a reading level, not a grade level. Also, the average percent correct for the quarter and year-to-date is listed. The goal is 85%. A lower percent means the books are too difficult; and therefore, frustrating. A higher percent means the books are too easy and not challenging enough.
The STAR test is given approximately once a quarter and the reading level is adjusted at that time.The Accelerated Reader program requires students to read the unabridged versions of a book. To maintain the integrity of the program, students are not allowed to read the shortened or abridged versions of books, or to use video or movie versions of books.

MathScore is used in 2nd - 5th grade at Bishop Elementary. MathScore breaks down the mathematics curriculum into hundreds of individual math topics.
