G.A.T.E. (Gifted And Talented Education)

The G.A.T.E. program offers additional opportunities for eligible fourth and fifth grade students to develop critical thinking skills and creativity, and to pursue individual interest in greater depth. For more information contact your child's teacher.

Special Day Class

Self-contained classroom designed to meet the child's individual needs. Integration of learning through a
multi-sensory approach (hearing, touching, seeing). Individualized and small group instruction and hands-on manipulative and learning activities. Educational activities to develop social, perceptual, and language development skills. Annual assessment meeting in addition to parent/teacher conferences. Students are mainstreamed into regular class as appropriate.

Computer Lab

A computer networking program is installed to provide individual, small group or whole group computer-assisted instruction. A specialist from the Institute of Computer Technology and one computer aide coordinate the program. All grade levels are scheduled throughout the week.

English As A Second Language (ESL)

The ESL program is designed to develop fluency in English so the student can successfully master the skills, concepts and knowledge of the core curriculum. The students are identified through a home language survey that is completed when a child is registering for school. If the survey indicates that the primary language is other than English, and the teacher recommends testing, an oral language test will be given. The ESL program is conducted both in the classroom and on a pull-out basis.

Project Pride

A program of positive consequences to reward good behavior for individual students, groups, or classes is also in effect at San Miguel. Project Pride is a program where students work as an individual, or together as a class, to keep their classroom or the school clean, safe and a good place to be. Students are also rewarded for academic excellence, perfect attendance and other activities that show outstanding effort.

Perfect Attendance

Students who achieve perfect attendance at the end of each quarter and throughout the year receive special recognition.

Honor Roll and Scholarship Society

The grade reporting program provides a system to recognize students for their academic achievements.

Young Author's Faire

This event gives San Miguel students a chance to show their writing talents. The process begins with a visit from an author in assemblies for the entire school and workshops for grades four and five. Students receive helpful tips and inspiration for creating their literary masterpieces during this special day. Completed student books are judged, awarded ribbons (1st, 2nd, 3rd, and participation) and displayed for the entire school to view during Open House in April.

Multicultural Dance Festival

San Miguel students showcase their talents in a program featuring song and dance. All grades will perform on May 31, 2008.

Morning Open House

From 8:00 to 10:00 a.m. adults are invited to visit any classroom to see students in their everyday learning environment. This is a wonderful opportunity to see children at work and to learn more about future grade levels.
